Environmental Pollution and Modeling (PNM)
Environmental pollution is one of the most widespread and challenging problems the world is facing today. The rapid industrial and urban development of the past decades, along with unabated population growth, has resulted in extensive pollution of the air, water and land, leading to significant impacts on human health and the environment. To address this widespread problem, it is crucial to examine sources of pollution, pollutant release pathways, fate and transport mechanisms, and potential impacts on humans, animal and plant species. Where required effective remediation technologies for environmental restoration must be developed and implemented.
The objective of this concentration area is to introduce students to the physiochemical and biological processes related to the pollution of air, water and land and air, including the fate and transport of pollutants in the environment; their adverse impacts on nature and human health; and methods for environmental remediation. Field/laboratory investigations and numerical modeling of environmental systems are encompassed in this concentration area.
