New EU PRIMA Project "WETCARB" to be Coordinated by Boğaziçi University Institute of Environmental Sciences
Thursday, December 25, 2025
We are proud to announce that the project proposal "WETCARB: Wetland Ecosystem Tool for Carbon Accounting" has been successfully funded.
WETCARB is a research project selected under the EU PRIMA Section 1 2025 - Farming Systems in the Nexus call. WETCARB is specifically designed to quantify and demonstrate the carbon sequestration capacity of Mediterranean wetland ecosystems and surrounding agricultural areas. This project enables the generation, verification, and trade of carbon credits, linking environmental potential directly to income generation for the region.
The project aims to:
- Quantify sequestration capacity in four pilot sites through field-based GHG measurements.
- Develop a digital platform to convert field data into estimates for carbon credits and generate documentation for the voluntary carbon market
- Apply regenerative farming practices to demonstrate increased carbon storage and income potential.
The project is coordinated by IES faculty member Prof. Dr. Fatma Öztürk
The consortium includes distinguished partners from across the Mediterranean:
- Al-Balqa Applied University (Jordan) - Prof. Rebhi Damseh
- Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport (Egypt) - Prof. Yasser Gaber Dessouky
- University of Torino (Italy) - Prof. Davide Vione
- A Sound Fiction (Türkiye) - Miraç Yiğit Akdokur
- National Observatory of Athens (Greece) - Prof. Nikolaos Mihalopoulos
- Mediterranean Agrofood Competence Center (Greece) - Prof. Emmanouel Koudoumas
